T.L. Brown Provides Free Service for Dreamers After Trump Decision

When the Justice Department announced that President Trump had decided to end Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, thousands of young DACA recipients came to the disheartening realization that their coveted status will ultimately be taken away.

Though DACA does not grant citizenship, it provides work permits and deportation shields for certain young immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children. On the brighter side, those “Dreamers” who have a current DACA status set to expire on or before March 5, 2018 may renew their DACA permits until October 5, 2017.

DACA renewal costs can be steep for budgeting teens and young adults since applicants are usually forced to pay high government processing fees in addition to sizable attorney fees. As a remedy, The T.L. Brown Law Firm, P.C., a San Diego-based law firm specializing in immigration, will begin offering free legal aid for qualifying DACA renewal applications until October 5, 2017. The Dreamers who take advantage of T.L. Brown Law’s offer will only have to pay the standard processing fees to the government.

“I was disappointed by the President’s decision to end DACA and I’m not certain that Congress will replace it in a timely manner,” says Attorney Tristan Brown, the lead attorney of T.L. Brown Law. “Thankfully, we have this opportunity to renew DACA for a limited number of young people. I don’t want money to be a factor that causes these current Dreamers to miss the renewal deadline.”

The future is most uncertain for Dreamers whose statuses expire after March 5, 2018. Unless the law changes, new applications and renewals for permits expiring after March 5, 2018 will no longer be accepted for the Obama-era program.

Fredy Lopez, a T.L. Brown Law client and current DACA recipient, is projected to lose his status shortly after March 5, 2018. “How am I going to continue working?” asks Lopez. “I have a family to support.”

Dreamers that reside in Southern California and have a DACA status set to expire on or before March 5, 2018 may contact T.L. Brown Law for help. “I encourage more immigration attorneys to join me in offering free legal assistance for DACA renewals during this crucial time,” states Attorney Brown. “We have to get as many of these kids in the door as possible.”
